7 Red Flag Statements of Stubbornness

January 28, 2009

Lots of people are proud of being stubborn.

Stubborn people get their way at the expense of their relationships. Lots of relationship drama is due to stubbornness.

It’s hard to work with a stubborn person. It’s hard to be married to a stubborn person. It’s hard to be a daughter or son of a stubborn parent.

There’s  no room for error. No room for another opinion and no room for fun.

How do you spot a stubborn person? A key quality is the overpowering need to be right.

Listen to how they talk.

  1. “I hope he fails,” Said by Rush Limbaugh about president Obama.
  2. “It’s my way or the highway” probably said by one of your parents.
  3. “I already know,” said by someone you were trying to teach.
  4. “Yes but,” said by someone who didn’t want to take your advice.
  5. “That’s just he way I am,” when said by someone who justifies bad behavior.
  6. “That’s just the way it is,” said by someone who is discounts your ideas.
  7. “I don’t care what you think, here are the facts,” said by someone who is not open to listening to your point of view.

Why do so many stubborn people wear their stubbornness like a badge of honor? Two reasons:

1. They don’t know the difference between tenacity and stubbornness. Tenacious people look for collaboration and ideas to accomplish a goal. They have courage and a “never-say-die” attitude. A stubborn person just wants you to do what they say and they have an “I need to be right” attitude.

2. Stubborn people have not yet learned that flexibility is more powerful and offers more solutions.

If you want to improve your communication and relationships, practice flexibility and let go of the need to be right.
